Extension Office plans Forage Field Day for Aug. 29th

The Annual Southwest Forage Field Day is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 29 at the Virginia Tech Research Farm in Glade Spring.

Supper will be served, so please call (276)676-6309 by Tuesday, August 27th if you plan to attend. There is no cost for the meeting.

The program will include equipment demonstrations, research plot tours, and presentations on various topics as described below.

It includes a tour of the corn silage hybrid trial (56 hybrids from 12 companies).

This year has been a challenging year for many corn producers due to drought conditions which affected much of the area. The hybrids at the research station went through a period of extended dry weather but have performed well, given the conditions.

We often get questions about seeding or reseeding pasture and hay crops and the steps that are necessary for achieving a successful final stand. A major consideration for success is setting the seed drill up to sow the grass. One of the most common reasons for failure is getting the seed too deep in the soil. We will discuss proper setup and seeding depth using a no-till drill to demonstrate this.

Another topic discussed will be the cost of producing hay. Is it cheaper to buy or own your own equipment? If you are buying hay, what is it worth or if you are selling hay, what is it worth? The cost of hay making equipment and production expenses are significant and should be considered regardless of which option you are thinking about.

We also plan to have a drone operator present to discuss using a drone to apply fertilize and weed control.

Other topics discussed include the August Seeded Oats as a Fall Forage Option and a Review of the Orchard Grass and Tall Fescue Variety Evaluation.

There will be seed company representatives there to discuss their products. There will also be equipment dealers there to display their equipment.

I believe we have a good program lined up and hope you will be able to attend. The address for the research farm is 12326 VPI Farm Rd., Glade Spring, VA 24340.

We hope you will plan to be there.
