Bristol Herald Courier

LeAnn Lane Overbay is the new head volleyball coach at Gate City High School as the Blue Devils will be without a VHSL Hall of Fame head coach at the helm in 2024.

"This morning Coach Amy Reed submitted her letter of resignation for the position of head volleyball coach at Gate City High School," athletic director Zeke Newton said in a statement on Wednesday. "School administration is currently in the process of filling it internally. Gate City High School will have no further comment at this time."

A day later, Overbay took over.

Overbay played at Sullivan North High School and Montreat College and previously had a stint as the boss at Unicoi County. She is an eighth-grade math teacher at Gate City Middle School and will officially make her debut when the Blue Devils open the season at Daniel Boone on Aug. 26.

She takes over for the most accomplished volleyball coach in Southwest Virginia history.

Reed won six state championships to go along with multiple regional titles and district crowns since taking over for her husband, Darren, as the head coach of the Blue Devils in 2003. Her team won it all in 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2013 and 2014 and this past season went 20-7, won its fourth straight regional title and lost to Appomattox in the VHSL Class 2 state semifinals.

Reed is originally from Fries, Virginia, in Grayson County.
