Plan for 60 homes in Cotswold village but residents have concerns

Gloucester Diocesan Board of Finance (GDBF) has submitted plans to build 60 homes off the B4632 in Willersey, but concerns have been raised regarding infrastructure in the village.

Proposed to be built on mainly grazing land, GDBF has stated that 40% of the homes would be affordable, and the homes would range from one-bedroom bungalows to five-bedroom houses.

Helen McMaster said: "Whilst I have no objection to the building of additional homes in the village, there are already fundamental infrastructure issues that Willersey residents have to contend with, and these must be addressed before any further planning is granted.

"Willersey already has in excess of 125 new properties built without the existing infrastructure expanded to meet this extra capacity, such as roads, sewage and fresh water, medical services, and schools.

"Flooding, which was a once-in-ten-year event, has now become a regular occurrence, often 5 and 6 times a year, especially during prolonged periods of heavy rain.

"This affects Collin Lane, Blind Lane and Badsey Road under the railway bridge, with raw sewage being discharged into the flood waters and into the gardens of Collin Lane in particular.

"This sewage has been seen floating down Collin Lane and into the stream alongside the Recreation Ground / Willow Green, feeding into Badsey Brook, which ultimately feeds into the River Avon. This is not healthy for the residents along these courses or indeed the wildlife."

Nigel Mitchell Green said: "Local GP surgeries and dental practices are severely overstretched. The village primary school is small, constrained by its conservation area site, and most year groups are at capacity. A large, family-orientated development will exacerbate this crisis, forcing car-dependent journeys for essential services and education, thus undermining the sustainability claims."

Helen Peacop said: "While I recognise the need for appropriate housing within the Cotswold District, this proposal represents an unsustainable and harmful expansion. Willersey is a small rural settlement with limited services, employment opportunities, and public transport. Adding 60 dwellings would significantly increase the population without the necessary infrastructure to support it. The village school, road network, and drainage systems are already under strain. The proposal would increase traffic along the B4632 and Station Road, both of which are narrow and already hazardous. The proposal represents inappropriate development that would permanently alter the character of Willersey and its countryside setting"
