People are being reminded to celebrate Hallowe'en safely and responsibly.

The Welsh Ambulance Service has issued the advice ahead of what is typically one of its busiest times of the year.

Last year, between October 31 and November 5, the service received 7,050 emergency 999 calls and 14,323 non-emergency calls to NHS 111 Wales.

Sonia Thompson, assistant director of operations at the Welsh Ambulance Service, said: "Hallowe'en is an exciting time for many, but it can also be an exceptionally busy time for our teams.

"As we approach Hallowe'en, we are urging everyone to prioritise safety for themselves, their families, and others, and to only call 999 in the event of a serious or life-threatening emergency.

"With some simple precautions, we can all help ensure that this Hallowe'en is both enjoyable and safe."

The service advises that young trick-or-treaters should always be accompanied by a responsible adult, and that people should stick to well-lit streets and avoid poorly lit or unfamiliar areas.

Motorists are also being reminded to take extra care, as more children and pedestrians are likely to be out on the streets.

Additional tips include using battery-operated LED lights instead of candles for decorations, choosing face paint over masks, and ensuring face paints are non-toxic and suitable for skin.

The public is also encouraged to be mindful of vulnerable individuals in the community, particularly the elderly, who may find Hallowe'en activities unsettling.

For those attending or hosting gatherings, the ambulance service is urging people to drink responsibly and to plan ahead for safe travel home.

Ms Thompson said: "Please remember that 999 should only be used for serious or life-threatening emergencies.

"For non-urgent medical advice, the NHS 111 Wales website, your GP, or your local pharmacist are available to assist."
