Westside defeats Laney in first week of Georgia high school football

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Westside and Laney continued their heated and storied rivalry Friday night.

Westside won 21-12 over Laney.

Going into the game, the Wildcats looked to rely on Senior quarterback Trevon Griffin.

Then it seemed like they tried everything they could to close it out.

Jaylen Stone threw a late interception, which would lead to a touchdown the following drive for Tiquavious Kemp.

Laney's 2-point attempt would fail, and Westside capitalized on the big stop.

Tamari Curry would ice the game with a nearly 70-yard touchdown.

The Patriots picked up where they left off last year under Lee Hutto..

The biggest advantage Laney had going into the game was the experience of the coaching staff.

Ronnie Baker enters his fifth year with Laney, but Cedric Mason is entering year one coaching Westside.

Baker has a roster that consists of 20 seniors, including Jaylen Stone once again taking snaps for the Patriots, leading them to a 6-0 start last year.
