My husband and I recently got back from celebrating my grandson's 2nd birthday party and babysitting him while his mom worked in Houston, Texas.
Spending a week away from work with a 2 year old is still some work but a lot of joy. Russell loves walks and thankfully, Texas is a bit warmer than Idaho.
The night before we left, Russell and I went for a walk at night to see all the Christmas lights. At first I felt rushed to do the walk, get him home for a bath and then to bed. But as we went at toddler speed, I pondered on how excited he was about every little thing. He was clapping at the blow ups, dancing with the music, and exclaiming at the bright lights. Of course he had to also run through the sprinklers and splash in the pools of water. I was reminded of Christ's teaching to become as a little child and made an effort to just be present and feel the joy he was feeling at the moment. To see the world through a toddlers eyes. It was a whole new experience and a bonding moment with my little grandson.
Finding joy during the holidays through mindfulness can be a meaningful way to connect with the season, reduce stress, and create lasting memories. Here are some mindful practices that may help you embrace the holiday spirit and awake your inner child:
1. Be Present with Loved Ones
Put down the phone: Focus on fully engaging in conversations and moments with family and friends.
Savor shared experiences: Whether it's decorating, cooking, or watching a holiday movie, give your undivided attention to the activity.
2. Practice Gratitude
Reflect daily: Write down or think of three things you're grateful for, specific to the season.
Share gratitude: Express appreciation to those who bring positivity to your life during the holidays.
3. Engage Your Senses
Notice the sights and sounds: Take in the twinkling lights, the music, or the laughter around you.
Savor tastes and smells: Eat holiday treats slowly, paying attention to the flavors and aromas. You will find you may only need a few bites and be satisfied
4. Simplify and Let Go
Avoid over-scheduling: Prioritize meaningful traditions over trying to do everything.
Release expectations: Let go of the pressure to make everything "perfect."
5. Find Joy in Small Moments
Look for happiness in little things: the smile of a child, the warmth of a cozy blanket, the lights from the tree, or the smell of freshly baked cookies.
Enjoy every moment of the holidays being present and mindful and feel the joy it can bring in any season!
