Adam Goldberg Reflects on 'Friends' Lack of Diversity

Adam Goldberg, known for his role as Eddie on 'Friends', has criticized the show's lack of racial diversity, a criticism previously acknowledged by the show's creators.

AceShowbiz - In a recent interview with The Independent, Adam Goldberg, who played the quirky roommate Eddie on "Friends", addressed the show's notable lack of diversity.

"In terms of diversity, looking back, it seems insane," said Goldberg. "Black people have spoken about this, and it was like they never expected to see themselves, so not seeing themselves was no surprise."

Goldberg attributed the lack of diversity to the cultural norms of the time, saying, "It was just the norm... I spent a lot of my career complaining about how Italians can play Jews." He added that he faced feedback about not being considered "all-American" enough.

While Goldberg acknowledges the lack of diversity, he also expresses gratitude for his experience on the show. "I am so happy to be part of the show's legacy," he said.

The lack of diversity in "Friends" has been acknowledged by the show's creators, Marta Kauffman and David Crane. Kauffman has expressed regret for not promoting racial diversity more effectively, while Schwimmer has stated that he campaigned for more diverse casting for his character, Ross.

Goldberg's comments add to the ongoing discussion about the need for representation in television and popular culture. As the years go by, audiences have become increasingly vocal in demanding that shows reflect the diversity of society.
