Mansfield man charged in weekend shooting

URBANA -- A Mansfield man has been charged in a shooting early Saturday morning in Urbana that left two people injured.

On Monday, Champaign County Judge Brett Olmstead arraigned Maurice J. Conley, 48, on two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Urbana police officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of Vawter Street around 3:30 a.m. Saturday for a report of a shooting with injuries. By the time they arrived, two men who had suffered gunshot wounds had already been driven in a private vehicle to a local hospital.

Assistant State's Attorney Troy Lozar said a witness who reportedly drove the two victims to the hospital told officers she was standing outside a residence with seven people, including an individual she knew by the street name "Crypto," when one man there told Crypto to leave the area.

She said Crypto then walked toward the man and shot at him five to six times with a small black handgun, Lozar said, adding she gave a description of what Crypto was wearing and reported he lives on Philo Road.

One of the victims, a man who was shot three times in the arm, first told police Conley shot him, then he said he couldn't remember who the shooter was. He indicated there had been an altercation between the shooter and another person before the shots rang out, Lozar said.

The other victim, a man shot in the torso, told police that he had told the man named Crypto to move away from his wife's car before Crypto told him he was going to blow his head off, the prosecutor said. The victim also allegedly indicated that a physical fight had taken place between Crypto and at least one other person.

Lozar said an Urbana officer who had previous encounters with Conley reported that he has gone by the name "Crypto" and showed witnesses a photo of Conley, and they identified him as Crypto and the shooter.

Another witness told officers he saw Conley arguing with someone in a parking lot outside before hearing gunshots, and he saw someone wrestle for Conley's gun before Conley ran away, Lozar said.

Officers arrested Conley at 5:48 a.m. after locating him in a nearby apartment complex in the 2000 block of Philo Road. Police found multiple bullet casings in the area where the shooting took place, and a vehicle appeared to have been hit twice in the fender.

Conley faces six to 30 years in prison if convicted of aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony. The state petitioned for him to be held in jail ahead of his trial and a hearing on that matter was set for Tuesday afternoon.
