BOISE, Idaho -- At least 20 people in Idaho have reported drinking raw milk before becoming sick with Campylobacter bacteria since the beginning of August 2025, health officials announced Tuesday. Six of those cases were from children under the age of twelve.

Campylobacter bacteria is linked to the consumption of raw and undercooked poultry, meat, seafood and other produce, according to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). Drinking untreated water can also cause illness, which is known as campylobacteriosis. This can cause symptoms like diarrhea.

Three cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infections have also been reported in connection to raw milk consumption, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare announced. STEC can cause "very serious infections."

Two people in the state required hospitalization after consuming raw milk from "various brands."

Officials said some people are at a higher risk of health problems from the consumption of unpasteurized dairy products, including young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

In Idaho, raw milk is not required to be tested for bacteria like E. coli or Campylobacter. However, it is sold legally through multiple outlets. The department is investigating the link between consuming raw milk and the reported illnesses.

Pasteurization involves heating milk to over 145 degrees for at least 30 minutes. Bacteria is normally killed during that process. But the bacteria found in raw milk can cause symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and dehydration, according to the Idaho Department for Health and Welfare.
