Blog: My favorite genre

Blog: My favorite genre

I've been a game nerd since middle school and considering that my aunt has passed the forty, a lot of games have passed in my life. There have been many bad gaming experiences, there have been gaming experiences that have been neither good nor bad and then there have been those moments of gaming that still give me that warm feeling in that lump of flesh that sits behind the sternum called the heart. My personal top list of favorite games is terribly wide when it comes to genre, it's everything from horror games to role-playing games and when my nerdy game friend sat for hours the other day nagging about his great love for the Metroidvania genre that I personally can't prefer, I started to think about which game genre owned my heart.

What kind of games made me speak so dedicated and a bit cult-brainwashed about the way he did about his? It all ended in me not sleeping more than just a few hours during the whole past night as my little head had been busy weighing the pros and cons against each other over certain games and at the same time been busy going through all my favorite games. One of my absolute favorite games is the Resident Evil series as you know, but the horror genre itself? No thanks.

The only reason I dare to play Resident Evil is that after all these years I somehow know what to expect. I'm comfortable with steering, I know how they often think with boss fights and when you should take out the toilet roll and start wiping your ass before you shit yourself out of fear. But other horror games? No thanks. I simply don't dare.

As I said, I have the courage of a rabbit and not a lion. So there the horror genre fell away. Then we have RPG games. I loved Witcher 3 damn much, the Mass Effect series as well, Skyrim and I'm fanatical when it comes to the Fallout series but at the same time I can't with Japanese RPGs in the spirit of Final Fantasy so then that genre also goes away as there are more games I don't like there than the ones I'm crazy about.

So after a lot of going back and forth, I've come to the conclusion that the genre that makes the most games that I love is... Action adventure. There the list can be made eternal it feels like. You can kind of squeeze in so many titles there such as The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn and Red Dead Redemption 2. The two God of War games, the Uncharted series, and all the latest Tomb Raider adventures. Does GTA also fit here by the way? Oh, what do I say? If my list is so then it does, I say, because I can't live without my GTA V either. And then I'm very weak for Star Wars Jedi series and for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. So this is the phase Majsan's favorite genre. Now it's done and I'm now going to sleep like a little pig all night without thinking about this life-changing question.
