Thomas Tuchel breaks silence on Mason Greenwood's England future after Jamaica snub

England manager Thomas Tuchel has provided an update on Mason Greenwood's international future after the Marseille striker opted against switching allegiances to Jamaica. The 23-year-old has received just one senior cap for the Three Lions, which came in a 1-0 victory against Iceland back in 2020. It later emerged that Greenwood was involved in a scandal with Phil Foden during that trip, inviting two Icelandic women back to their hotel room and breaching the quarantine rules in place at the time.

Then-manager Gareth Southgate did not call Greenwood up for his country again, with his chances further diminishing following allegations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive behaviour, which effectively ended his Manchester United career. But having now revived his career in France, Tuchel has spoken out after the player left the door open for an England return.

Tuchel's Comments on Greenwood Call-Up

Greenwood is eligible to play for Jamaica through his grandfather and satisfies FIFA's requirements for a nationality switch, having appeared in fewer than three competitive matches for England before turning 21. Reggae Boyz coach Steve McClaren had been hoping to call up the former Red Devil ahead of their clashes with Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago during this international break.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Greenwood has averaged a goal contribution every Ligue 1 game to start the 2025/26 season.

However, despite being granted citizenship and obtaining a new passport, Greenwood did not sign the documents that would make his switch from a footballing perspective official. McClaren admitted his disappointment upon discovering that the forward did not want to commit his future to any national team, instead focusing solely on his club football. Nevertheless, the former England head coach remained optimistic that he might be able to call upon Greenwood later in the year.

As for Tuchel, he confirmed that he had not spoken to the player or anyone associated with him. However, the German refused to outright close the door on a potential return in the future.

"I have not spoken to him until now. I have not spoken to him or his camp," the Champions League winning tactician revealed.

"My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn't give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team. I don't rule anything out but he is no priority at the moment."

Of the players listed as attackers in Tuchel's latest squad, inly Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins managed more goal contributions than Greenwood's 28 in all competitions last campaign. Despite that, his checkered past appears to still be holding back any chance of an immediate return to the Three Lions set up.
