For the second time this summer, a raccoon caught in Niagara County has tested positive for rabies, the County Health Department reported Thursday.
According to the report, three dogs that had been vaccinated for rabies encountered the raccoon on Aug. 15 in their yard on Lake Street in the Village of Wilson. The animal was sent for testing at the State Department of Health's Griffin Laboratory in Wadsworth and was euthanized.

The dog did not have to be quarantined since its vaccinations were up-to-date, health officials said. They added that no humans were exposed.
The first rabid raccoon was encountered by a dog on July 18 on Upper Mountain Road in the Town of Cambria. That dog also had recently received a rabies booster shot and no people were endangered.
Raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats are all carriers of the rabies virus, health officials said. They reminded residents not to feed, touch or adopt wild animals, including stray dogs and feral cats. They also advised keeping family pets indoors at night.
