Flint screenings highlight Black History Month with local documentary

FLINT, MI - In honor of Black History Month, Mott Community College (MCC) and the City of Flint are hosting two screenings of St. John Street: Story of a Neighborhood, a documentary highlighting the history and displacement of a once-thriving Black community in Flint.

The first screening is Wednesday, Feb. 26, from noon to 1 p.m. at MCC's Regional Technology Center Auditorium.

The second will be held at Flint City Hall's Dome Auditorium on Thursday, Feb. 27, from noon to 1 p.m.

The documentary was produced by MCC faculty member Rodney Brown and his son, Justin Brown, both filmmakers dedicated to preserving Flint's rich history.

St. John Street was once a vibrant neighborhood that served as a cultural and social hub for Black families in Flint. However, in the mid-20th century, the community was displaced due to urban renewal projects and the construction of I-475, altering the landscape of the city and the lives of those who called it home.

The documentary captures the stories of former residents, offering a glimpse into their experiences, struggles, and the legacy of a lost neighborhood.

The MCC screening will offer attendees a light lunch, with seating limited to 100 participants. The Flint City Hall screening provides another opportunity for community members to engage with the film and reflect on this significant chapter in the city's history.

Both screenings aim to spark conversations about urban development, displacement, and the resilience of Flint's Black community.

The events provide a chance for residents, students, and historians to learn about a pivotal moment in Flint's past and its impact on generations to come.

For those interested in attending, early arrival is encouraged due to limited seating.
