The federal government has awarded Maine more than $37.5 million for its Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program in the upcoming fiscal year.

In addition, tribes in Maine will receive more than $1.4 million in LIHEAP funds.

LIHEAP is a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services program that helps low-income households pay their energy bills, make repairs to heating and cooling systems, and weatherize their homes.

The funds are a part of a $3.7 billion federal investment distributed across the country.

More than 45,000 households in Maine receive assistance through LIHEAP, according to a news release from U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree's office.

LIHEAP is administered by states. Households can apply through their local Community Action Agency, which they can locate through the Maine State Housing Authority.
