Security First

The government's decision not to extend the repatriation deadline for undocumented Afghan nationals marks a necessary, if long-delayed, turning point. Over 1.4 million individuals have already returned to Afghanistan, and it is evident that Pakistan's patience, stretched over four decades of hospitality, has reached its limit. While the country has shouldered this humanitarian burden for years, the generosity has too often been taken for granted, and at times, misused.

This move is both pragmatic and inevitable. Pakistan has repeatedly raised concerns about elements using its goodwill as cover for activities that threaten national security. The recent escalation in cross-border terrorism, coupled with the Afghan government's unwillingness to take responsibility for attacks originating from its soil, has only deepened mistrust. Diplomatic overtures and appeals for cooperation have been met with indifference, leaving Pakistan with few options but to safeguard its people by tightening its borders.

While critics may call the measure harsh, it must be remembered that no country can afford to compromise its security in the face of persistent threats. The state has an obligation, first and foremost, to protect its citizens, and that obligation cannot be deferred for the sake of sentiment. The deteriorating bilateral climate between the two nations only underscores the urgency of ensuring that the space for exploitation is decisively closed.

For decades, Pakistan provided shelter, employment, and opportunity to those displaced by conflict. That chapter, however, cannot continue indefinitely without reciprocity or responsibility. The repatriation drive, therefore, should be seen not as an act of hostility, but as one of necessity, a reassertion of sovereignty and order. It is time Pakistan placed its own security where it has always belonged: at the very top of the national agenda.
