Glasgow Warriors threw away a 14-3 lead to eventually lose out to a last minute drop goal from Benetton in Italy this evening.
Tries from Jare Ogintibeju and Josh McKay - both converted by Adam Hastings - gave Warriors a 14-3 lead at the break. Hastings missed a penalty just before the interval.
That was as good as it got for Warriors as individual errors and poor game management put them under sustained pressure after the interval.
Benetton scored early in the second period through Tommaso Menoncello before Jacob Umaga's second penalty on 70 minutes made it a one-point game.
With the clock in the red, the ball reached full-back Rhyno Smith, who slotted his drop goal from 50 metres to secure the win for Benetton.
After the match Franco Smith told Scotland Rugby News: "I'm obviously disappointed with the result, that goes without saying, but I thought we should have scored more points in the first half. I thought Benetton was defensively very good the second half.
"It's always difficult to come and play here and to end up having a high penalty count like that in the second part of the game is something we'll have to look at. That trapped us on the outside of the pitch and didn't give us attack platforms in the second half.
"Again, it might be early in the season flaws, but obviously things we can find out. I'm not concerned, I thought we led the whole game and it looked like we were the better team the whole night, so I take that positively."
Sione Tuipulotu was replaced late in the game by Dan Lancaster but Smith said there were no injury concerns over the Scotland centre.
"No, no injury to him. It's just a cramp. Obviously, he hasn't played for a while. The grass pitch here is different from what we've been working on to get him back into play. I was definitely just precautionary."
