LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - A Spokane County man has been charged after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase in Liberty Lake that ended in a crash.
According to charging documents, an officer on patrol on Aug. 16 observed a car traveling 40 to 45 mph in a 30 mph zone near East Country Vista Drive and North Molter Road. The officer reported the car also failed to signal a turn.
Court docs said that when the officer attempted to follow, radar indicated the vehicle was traveling 65 mph, the affidavit said. The driver allegedly swerved into oncoming lanes before crashing into a wooded area near South MacKenzie Beach Lane and East Lakeside Road.
The driver, later identified as , and two passengers fled on foot, according to investigators. Two others in the vehicle were detained nearby. A search involving a drone, a K-9 unit and Spokane Regional Air Support was launched.
Passengers told investigators they repeatedly asked Hite to stop and let them out of the vehicle, according to court records. Police said Hite also had a warrant from Idaho for a parole violation.
Items with retail tags and theft prevention devices were found inside and outside the vehicle, though investigators said it was unclear who was responsible for the merchandise or whether a store wanted to pursue charges.
Spokane police said they found Hite at his home around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Multiple specialty units responded, including SWAT, hostage negotiators and the Air Support Unit. Officers said they quickly surrounded the home.
As communication efforts began, Hite was contacted in the yard and taken into custody without incident. He was unarmed at the time.
Hite was arrested and booked into the Spokane County Jail.
Hite faces charges of attempting to elude law enforcement, unlawful imprisonment and reckless endangerment. Hite's bond was set at $5,000, and he is scheduled for an arraignment hearing on Sept. 9.
