COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - For the first time in Columbus history, a local restaurant owner is coming home as the world pizza champion.
Out of 110 of the best pizza makers, Leo DeCesaris won today in the toughest division of the 'World Pizza Championships' at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas.
He's been the owner the last decade of Cerrone's Brick Oven Pizzeria in North Columbus, which has now also won 'The Best in the Southeast' for a second time.
It was blind judging by culinary experts. DeCesaris had 30 minutes to make his winning pizza, which included a a 5 day fermentation process on the dough that included extracted yeast off grapes and apples.
"It was a very fruitful dough. I used Italian imported flowers. On top of it was a hickory and cherry smoked mozzarella, we got some special pig from Spain and made some chorizo, got some hand carved."
That pizza was topped with pistachio-encruisted pears, a wine glaze, other spanish cheese, and more. He won a 75-hundred dollar cash prize.
DeCesaris said he's glad to use pizza talents to give God the glory and has a lot of pride in representing Columbus on the world stage.
