Sony has plans to remake the hit sci-fi movie 'Starship Troopers' based on the classic novel of the same name.
The original Starship Troopers has been one of Sony's biggest IPs in recent years, albeit only following its theatrical release, in which the film originally earned $121 million at the box office. In the years since, however, the film was followed by a number of sequels, an animated series, and other media including video games. And now, one of science-fiction's most popular modern stories may once again be reinvented for the big screen.
According to our sources, Sony has plans to produce a remake of the 1997 film Starship Troopers, itself based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein.
With Starship Troopers having grown into such a popular market for today's audiences, it's no surprise that Sony would have interest in producing a new remake based on the original film and Heinlein's novel. In fact, there's plenty of potential in crafting such a remake, especially when one considers the differences between the 1959 book and the 1997 film.
Of course, there is the issue that comes with producing a remake of such a popular movie. It will be difficult to follow up director's Paul Verhoeven's unique vision which resulted in other sci-fi classics like RoboCop and Total Recall to become pop culture giants. Sony will have their work cut out for them when picking a new creative team to helm the new Starship Troopers project.
With that said, Blomkamp is only one name mentioned, and there could be other directors in the mix. It does suggest that Sony has their eyes set on making Starship Troopers a major venture, however, one that could even find the mainstream box office success that its 1997 predecessor never did.
For those unfamiliar, the basis of 1997's Starship Troopers revolves around a futuristic military that works to protect the United Citizen Federation. In particular, they have entered an interstellar war with the Arachnids, an alien species brought to life with incredible practical effects and CGI. The overall story functioned as a social commentary that, in 1997, turned into a satire of fascism. It'll be interesting to see, then, a new Starship Troopers story post-2025.
