Cut which spending?

Re: "Big Spenders may thwart DOGE effort in Texas -- Musk's federal crusade has fans here, but state leaders have made expensive plans," by Bill Peacock, Tuesday Opinion.

First, I would ask Mr. Peacock what benefits from spending he is willing to cut. I want that from everyone who keeps saying cut, cut, cut. One person's waste is another one's benefit, so stop saying everyone else needs to suffer and offer up something you are willing to suffer from.

Second, the GOP has been in charge for something like 20-plus years and for even longer has been claiming there is all this government waste that they will cut. After 20-plus years, if any meaningful waste existed, they should have gotten rid of it by now.

My guess is it was always hot air. Pandering works on the right.

Finally, if you have a growing state and want future growth, of course it will cost more money year after year to operate. You have more people. You have inflation. Not rocket science.

I would say it costs more to educate children for the same reasons, but Texas prefers to let other states educate the young and then import them. We will have plenty of uneducated native Texans to provide cheap labor to the companies moving here, and all that money we save on education.

Legislators blackmailed

What has happened to my country's government? I can't say it better than this quote: "The owner of a car company is controlling the House of Representatives from a social media app."

I expect my representatives to work together and do their legislative jobs. They are being blackmailed, though, by a technique we are familiar with in Texas -- if you don't toe my line you will be defeated in a primary.

Less than balanced

Re: "How balanced is The News ' staff politically?" by Stephen Buckley, Wednesday Opinion.

As a multi-decade subscriber, I can certainly testify to the less than balanced reporting. I keep reading in your paper about how balanced you are on your reporting but for some reason you keep getting negative feedback from readers.

The perfect example is the negativity toward conservative Republican voters and the bias against Donald Trump. Any nugget of negative information regarding Trump is normally front page, but last week when ABC News agreed to pay him $15 million for its usual false reporting regarding him, that news was not on the front page, but lower on the second page.

I believe you guys are still a opinion-based newspaper instead of factual reporting-based one.

AdvertisementWhat News ignores

If this opinion piece is saying The Dallas Morning News is not partisan in any way and there is no need to go transparent and reveal the political affiliation of its journalist, I politely disagree.

The News has its brand of journalism and the examples are too many to list. The News basically ignoring the horrors of Joe Biden's open southern border and his inflation causing financial policy that is hurting so many people are only two of many that can be listed.

AdvertisementSMU, add State Fair game

One big step Southern Methodist University is missing in its quest to be fully embraced by Dallas and its suburbs is returning to play a big game at the Cotton Bowl during the State Fair of Texas. Having SMU play a program like Clemson or Miami annually on one of the free Saturdays during the State Fair would provide an unmatched atmosphere (corny dogs, rides, midway games) and easier access (via DART and TRE) to the game for those fans who live in South Dallas or near transit hubs.

Sure, moving a campus home game to Dallas would cost the program money, but a partnership with the city could make up for it in other ways that benefit both.

For sports fans who are non-SMU alums, it seems like too easy a game plan to not execute on the field.

Disclose surcharge

Re: "Surcharges creep in," by Robert M. Lebovitz, Thursday Letters.

I totally agree with Lebovitz about the 3% fee to use a credit card. The 3% fee for using a credit card tells me the business is in financial trouble, or they are cheap.

I had my car serviced at a Cadillac dealership in Frisco. I was shocked when I checked out and I was told about the fee. As an elderly person who has had her purse stolen, I often only carry a credit card. Customers should be told about this policy before they agree to a purchase or service.

Only silence on drones

Since mid-November, there have been reports (and videos) of large drones flying over New Jersey and other nearby states. No one knows who is flying them, or for what purpose. If the government knows anything about these events, it's not informing the U.S. public about them.

Can you say Chinese spy balloon? Why doesn't the government jam the radio frequencies these objects run on to try to bring one or more of these drones down? Or in a worst case scenario, shoot them down?

And to ice this cake, what has been done about the drones seen flying over a military base in England where there are U.S. F-35 Stealth Fighters based?

Yet again, the Biden administration has failed the citizens of the United States in protecting them.
