Unlike other former Pac-12 teams that have stumbled after joining a new conference, the Oregon Ducks have found immediate success in the Big Ten.
Week 11 of the college football season was a prime example of this. The No. 1 Ducks obliterated the Maryland Terrapins by a score of 39-18, moving them to 10-0 on the year. An achievement that has happened just two other times in program history.
On top of that, quarterback Dillon Gabriel broke Case Keenum's NCAA record for total touchdowns, and head coach Dan Lanning scored a massive contract extension as a result of the win.
According to Steve Berkowitz of USA TODAY, the Ducks' tenth win of the regular season automatically extends Lanning another year and also nets him a major payday of over nine million.
"The Ducks' Dan Lanning achieved a goal in his agreement with the school that gives him an automatic one-year contract extension if the team wins at least 10 regular season games," wrote Berkowitz. "The added year is currently scheduled to be worth $9.4 million - all guaranteed."
Lanning likely isn't worried about any other seasons besides the current one, but it certainly can't be the worst thing to earn nearly $10 million. The report revealed that Lanning is under contract to be in Eugene through 2031 following his automatic extension.
The bonus doesn't stop at 10 wins either, as a win over the Wisconsin Badgers (5-4) next week for No. 11 would net him a $250,000 bonus, as would a win over the Washington Huskies (5-5) in the regular season finale. On top of the regular season bonuses, Lanning can earn himself more money depending on how the team does in the postseason.
The Ducks are one of the hottest teams in college football and have won all but two games this season by double digits. They'll hit the road in Week 12 to take on the Badgers in a game that will kick off at 7:30 pm ET and will air on NBC.
