Langley officers receive commendations

Two Langley police officers were recognized this week for going above and beyond in their jobs.

During a city council meeting on Monday, Police Chief Tavier Wasser announced that two members of his department had received commendations for their service.

Officer Austin Proffitt provided backup assistance for an Island County Sheriff's Office deputy who was responding to an incident involving a man accused of stabbing his mother in the head with a screwdriver. When he arrived at the scene, Wasser said, Proffitt himself was struck by the man.

"Had he not been there, had he just done his job, there may have been a much worse outcome," Wasser said.

While driving back from training with the Oak Harbor Police Department, Officer Nicholas Hathaway noticed the abandoned vehicle of a suicidal subject on Highway 525. Hathaway managed to contact the individual, who said he was planning to kill himself.

"Had officer Hathaway not gone above and beyond and observed it, this life would have been lost," Wasser said.
