CHAMBERS COUNTY -- A tragic plane crash claimed the lives of a grandfather and his grandson on Saturday evening. The Chambers County Sheriff's Office reported that they received information about a possible downed aircraft near FM 1724, south of Interstate 10, at approximately 10:35 p.m.
The small aircraft, identified as a red and white low-wing "Commander," last data transmission recorded at 4:57 p.m indicating a sudden loss of altitude. The aircraft was piloted by Larry Motte from La Porte, accompanied by his juvenile grandson from Austin.
The Chambers County Sheriff's Office, Texas Game Wardens, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the United States Coast Guard conducted a massive search in the area of the last known coordinates throughout the night and into the following day.
On Sunday morning, the aircraft was discovered in a remote wooded area. Motte and his grandson were found deceased at the crash site.
The investigation into the crash has been handed over to federal authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
