MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A family remembered their loved one who was killed by a hit and run driver on I240 in December 2023.
"Once they're gone, it's the worst feeling ever because you are never going to see them again," said Elizabeth Arellano. "It feels so bad."
Arellano says her brother Jesus was killed on I240, after being involved in an accident near the Walnut Grove exit. The family says the past year had been difficult on them, and they're still looking for answers.
"If there is a way I can see him again, if he can see how I'm doing," Arellano said, "I just want to make him proud." The family gathered to mourn Jesus, who was just weeks from his twenty-first birthday. "How do you live with that guilt and not stop?'
Jesus' sister Maria said the 20-year-old and his friends were driving home in a Nissan Sentra from a party. Memphis Police said the same car was involved in an accident around 5:00 a.m. Investigators said when Jesus got out of the car after the accident another car, possibly a gray Infiniti, hit him and drove off.
Jesus died at the scene, and a woman was taken to the hospital.
"It's not fair you took something so important to us," Maria Arellano said. "We think he's going to come home, but he's not." Arellano spoke about how her brother was hardworking, loving, and always willing to give a hand. She remembered the time they came from Mexico as kids to live in Memphis.
While the family tries to heal, they're hoping the driver accused of killing Jesus is held accountable for leaving a home that can never be the same.
"Just be careful, and beware of those bad friends," Maria Arellano said. "And we miss you. Hope you are okay up there."
Memphis Police are still searching for the driver responsible for the hit and run. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
