Juggling Parenthood And Careers: Single Parents In NY Face Real Struggles

This can't be easy. You're a single parent in New York and you are trying to balance being a single parent and building a career. Just getting a job interview can be an issue for single parents, especially if the company isn't flexible with their interview times.

According to a recent study by Careerminds, 39% of single parents in New York have had to say "thanks, but no thanks" to job opportunities because the company wouldn't change their interview times.

I can't imagine the feeling of finding your dream job, just to have it slip away of scheduling conflicts. It's frustrating for the single parent, and the employer could be missing out on the perfect person for the job.

The study found that childcare is the biggest issue, with nearly 70% of single parents saying that this is the reason that they missed out on the interview. Taking their child to school and after-school activities were also factors.

However, there is a silver lining as some industries are realizing the importance of hiring someone that understands responsibility. Tech companies, the healthcare sector, along with the hospitality and tourism industry are making moves to help the single parents.

Flexibility is also key, with 40% saying that flexible scheduling would be a huge help. Thanks to the pandemic, virtual interviews are becoming more popular. This helps to take the hassle out of finding childcare or dealing with traffic. .

The survey also talked about disclosure. Apparently some singe parents feel that they have to conceal that they are single. Also, nearly two-thirds of them thought about not applying for a job because of a potential scheduling conflict.

When single parents had to turn down an interview, only 1/3rd of them were offered another solution to make the interview happen. Finally, 88% of the respondents think that single moms in managerial roles have it tougher than single dads.
