Watch: 'Stay well away' - Large blaze rips through home in Island Bay, Wellington

Residents are being asked to stay inside and close their windows after a fire broke out at a residential address in the Wellington suburb of Island Bay.

In a video shared online, flames can be seen pouring from a house, damaging the exteriors of two adjacent buildings.

Grey smoke can also be seen pouring out of the building and across the Island Bay sky.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said 10 crews were responding to a well-involved house fire reported about 6.50pm.

"Conditions are very windy, and firefighters are working on the Esplanade as well as on High St," the spokesperson said.

"People are asked to stay well away ... Residents affected by smoke should close doors and windows.

"The cause of the fire has not been established but it is reported to have begun in a garage and spread to a house."

Smoke from a house fire in Wellington's Island Bay is pouring across the south coast.

A police spokesperson told the Herald they were notified of a garage fire on High Street about 6.50pm.

"At this stage, we have only been required for traffic control."
