Alexander Zverev has decided on short notice to compete at his home Hamburg Open, which starts this Sunday, after his quarter-final exit at the ATP Rome Masters.
Organizers said on Friday that Zverev has accepted a wild card to participate in the tournament, which is a tune-up event to the French Open starting on May 25.
"I'm very happy to return to Hamburg. Everyone knows how much this place means to me. Hamburg is my birth place, I started playing tennis here and also received a wild card to play my first ATP tournament here," he said.
Zverev was eliminated from the Rome Masters after a defeat to Lorenzo Musetti on Wednesday.
World number one Jannik Sinner, meanwhile, has withdrawn from the Hamburg Open as he had qualified to the semi-finals of the Rome Masters.
Other top athletes skipping the Hamburg tournament are Musetti, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune.
