Newcastle United has no plans to sell Alexander Isak this summer, and even more promising news involving the Swedish international could be coming the Geordies' way in a quick fashion.
According to Mark Douglas of The i Paper, Newcastle is preparing to offer the striker a new contract instead of completing a top-money sale -- unless Isak definitively asks for it.
"The i Paper understands, there is no intention of selling the man most likely to help them punch their ticket back into the Champions League," Douglas wrote.
Despite recent interest from Barcelona and long-time admirers Arsenal always lurking, Newcastle has not set a valuation for Isak, with speculation suggesting any price tag would exceed £150 million.
Newcastle's improved financial position under Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) strengthens their ability to retain Isak, and clinching a Champions League berth should do nothing but confirm Isak's long-terms stay in Tyneside.
"That will allow them to move into the close season thinking about making big signings rather than contemplating unpalatable, cut-price sales," Douglas wrote about the PSR situation.
Most promisingly, Douglas reported that Newcastle plans to reopen contract talks with Isak this summer.
"The forward's current weekly wage is understood to be around the £145,000 mark and a pay bump would be reasonable given his rising stock across European football," Douglas wrote.
Extending his deal would also benefit Newcastle's PSR calculations by spreading his £63 million transfer fee over a longer period. However, discussions could be complex, with Isak's representatives potentially seeking a release clause similar to Bruno Guimaraes' contract.
That, in turn, could force NUFC to enter a dangerous place in the transfer market with high-spending clubs and financial powerhouses looming as potential threats to pay whatever that figure is set at to snatch Isak from Newcastle.
