2 hurt in NE Portland shooting; Bullets strike nearby apartment building

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Two people were shot and injured after a fight ended in gunfire in northeast Portland early Sunday, and nearby apartments were damaged by stray bullets, according to police.

Marx Phillips told FOX 12 he woke up around 2 a.m. to a strange sound outside his apartment on the corner of Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Northeast 48th Avenue.

"I thought it was backfire from a car," Phillips said. "There was probably around 10 to 12 pop, pop, pops."

It wasn't until he walked into his bathroom that he noticed dust in the air, and then a bullet lying on the floor.

"You can see where it went through, you can see the hole that went through my kitchen into my bathroom, and you can see where it hit the wall of my bathroom door and then into the pipe," Phillips said, referring to a sprinkler pipe that runs along his ceiling.

A hole through his second-story window was still visible on Sunday, as well as nine other markings in the bricks on the side of the building, all numbered by police.

"I got my cat and everything, she plays in that windowsill, so I'm just glad we're both okay," Phillips said.

Portland Police said they learned that a fight broke out inside a nearby business, and shots were fired outside on the street. Two people were hit by the gunfire, but are expected to survive.

Multiple neighbors including Chris Schneider can recall another shooting near the intersection a year ago, and he was shocked to hear the gunshots overnight.

"I came out here about 20 minutes after, and there were a lot of police here and I could see shell casings all across Sandy," Schneider said. "It's unacceptable and I don't know how we get any enforcement - people are treating the neighborhood like it's a playground."

Phillips has only lived there for six months and says the location has worked for him, but a close call with a bullet might be a turning point.

"It's a little stressful, I definitely don't know if I want to be in that apartment anymore," Phillips said. He plans to ask to move into a neighboring apartment in the same complex that is not facing the street.

Police said that as of Sunday afternoon, no one has been arrested, as the suspects fled before officers arrived.
