William Woods volleyball team opens season with double victory

FULTON, Mo. -- The William Woods volleyball team opened its season with a pair of wins Friday afternoon at Anderson Arena. The Lady Owls defeated the Waldorf Lady Vikings 3-0 and the Mount Mercy Lady Mustangs 3-2.

In the match against Mount Mercy, the Lady Owls overcame a two-set deficit, losing the first two sets 25-22 and 25-18. They rallied to win the third set 28-26 and evened the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.

William Woods began the fourth with a five-point run, featuring a kill by Marissa Solverud, two blocks (one by Solverud and one by Andressa Borges), an error by the Lady Mustangs and a kill by Borges. This gave the Lady Owls a 12-9 lead. They finished the set with a final kill from Solverud and two attack errors by Mount Mercy.

In the decisive fifth set, the Lady Owls secured a 15-8 victory with a seven-point run.

William Woods totaled 58 kills, while Mount Mercy had 60 kills. Luciana Paiva Pereira led with 12 kills, followed by Vitoria Campos Mello and Pamela Durazo with 11 each. Durazo also recorded 7 blocks, and Erin Treis led the team with 31 assists.

In their first match, the Lady Owls swept the Lady Vikings 3-0.

In the first set, Paiva Pereira's kill tied the score at 3, helping the Lady Owls take control. Audra Gray's ace gave William Woods its largest lead of the set, 23-12, before an attack error set up a break point, which Durazo capitalized on with a kill to end the set 25-15.

During the second set, although the Lady Vikings tied the score at 20, the Lady Owls took the lead with kills from Borges, Solverud, Paiva Pereira and Lauren Adams, winning the set.

The Lady Vikings fought hard in the third set, resulting in nine ties. William Woods ultimately secured a 27-25 win.

William Woods recorded 13 kills, while Waldorf had 10 kills. Borges led with 8 kills, with Campos Mello and Durazo adding 6 each. Durazo also led with 8 blocks, and Gray contributed 19 assists.

The Lady Owls (2-0) will be back in action at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Culver-Stockton College.
